Melton Road Market, West Bridgford

I spent Saturday morning at the Melton Road Market in West Bridgford, helping my brother out on the Cycle Garage stall and taking photos. Here’s Ed doing a complimentary bike check:

The Melton Road Market has been going for a while now but this was a bit of a re-launch, supported by Totally Locally:

Totally Locally is about opening your eyes to the great independent shops and buinesses which grace West Bridgford’s fair towns and villages. It’s here to encourage you to turn into the door of that shop you walk past every day. Go on, give it a try – there’s a good chance you’ll want to go back.

In amongst the craft stalls, local food businesses and brewers were a variety of entertainments. I particularly liked the well-dressed morris man leading the clog dancers on accordion:

What to wear for your photoshoot

Choosing clothes to wear for your photoshoot should be based on your personal preferences – if you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, that’s going to show clearly through on the photos.

It’s hard to go wrong with simple, bold colours. Try and match colours to seasons too – for example primary colours in spring, greens, oranges and browns in autumn. Avoid pastels (they almost always lack impact) and finely detailed patterns (as they can be distracting).

For kids the same applies, but it’s worth having at least one change of clothes, one plain (for colourful backgrounds) and one bright and colourful (for plain backgrounds).

Luminarium at Nottingham Lakeside Arts Centre

As part of Nottingham University’s Lakeside Arts Centre’s children’s festival (brilliantly called Wheee!), the Architects of Air returned with another luminarium. A luminarium is a large inflatable structure, made up of different coloured chambers that are lit by the sun.

It’s a strange environment and makes for a great location for a photographer – the shapes and colours are fantastic.

City Pulse – Nottingham music festival photos

Every year, Nottingham City Council hosts a free music festival across various outdoor locations. It mostly features older or less well-known acts but is no worse for it – the standard of the music and the talent of the bands has been great in previous years.

This year was no exception with ‘the best blues band in Britain’ (or so the brochure says), Paul Lamb and the King Snakes, taking centre stage in the Market Square. They really were very good – here’s their lead guitarist, Ryan Lamb:

Meanwhile, over at Trinity Square the Baghdaddies (gypsy ska) and Railroad Bill (wild west?) were playing to a smaller crowd:

The guys from Baghdaddies were enthusiastic posers – definitely not shy! And the lead singer/washboard player… well, until you’ve seen a grown man leap into the air while finishing his washboard solo, you haven’t seen anything.

Cupcake photo shoot

If there’s anything more cheerful than pictures of cupcakes, I’m not sure what it is. Maybe eating them?

Anyway, here are a few photos from a recent shoot that certainly cheered me up.

And if you were wondering, yes, a perk of the job was that I got to eat them when I was finished.

See the one with the cherry on top? That was the best, but was closely followed by the banana and toffee one with the little toffee sprinkles. Actually, they were all very nice…
